A student who is in foster care or from a low-income family may be presented with more obstacles in school than a fellow classmate who isn’t in the same situation. These obstacles can potentially hinder students from fulfilling their full potential in obtaining an education.
Kansas Kids GEAR UP helps defeat these obstacles by providing services designed to improve a student’s academic achievements.
When Melody Head, a teacher of 29 years and business instructor at Dodge City High School since 2005 was offered an opportunity to be a part of the GEAR UP program, she knew she had to join.
“It’s a natural fit for me to work with kids and get them engaged in school.” she said. Head has served as college access advisor for the GEAR UP program since 2009.
