ENMU-Roswell Celebrates National GEAR UP Week Starting October 24, 2011

The ENMU-Roswell GEAR UP Program has announced its participation in National GEAR UP Week 2011. This week commemorates the continuing success of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a college access program providing students and families the resources they need for college success. Since its inception in 1999, GEAR UP has improved educational outcomes for millions of students across the United States. ENMU-Roswell’s new GEAR UP grant will soon begin service to approximately 1,726 sixth and seventh graders in Chaves County.

The project design draws on current research in the field and the effective practices of other GEAR UP partnerships and postsecondary transition programs. The project’s objectives and services have a significant impact on targeted students, parents, and teachers by increasing 1) preparedness for high school graduation and college enrollment; 2) motivation, retention, and engagement; 3) student academic achievement; 4) parent/family involvement in school activities; 5) professional development opportunities for teachers; and 6) long-term partnership investment in programs that support students. National GEAR UP Week is a time to celebrate these accomplishments in our community.

“The success of GEAR UP is a combined effort of many individuals and organizations, including all of the various departments at ENMU-Roswell, the administrators, faculties, and support staffs of the four Chaves County school districts and a host of community businesses, organizations, and dedicated parents,” explained Steve Markl, current GEAR UP director.
